LIM DONG LAK - CORÉE AU COEUR
On the roof of the Grande Arche and on the Parvis de la Défense
from June 7 to Septembre 4, 2006
Knowing how to read the future in the present, how to grasp even the slightest movement of air and wind, by casting off the limits and stereotypes of sculpture…
To define Lim Dong-Lak, words are never enough. In his work, we encounter the true essence of art—deeply in tune with Nature, his sculptures seem to have always belonged exactly where they are, timeless, unmoving… as if echoing the words: “Time, suspend your flight.”
The artist closely observes human beings and engages in a constant dialogue with Nature in order to better perceive the subtle, imperceptible movements that animate both. Lim Dong-Lak is a calm and thoughtful man who speaks with a quiet voice, yet a quiet fire burns beneath this composed surface. His quest for balance is reflected in his sculptures—delicate yet powerful.
The materials Lim uses are at the core of his imagination; he captures their vital energy and infuses it into his creations.
Born in Daejeon, he is a professor of fine arts in Korea and continues to create and exhibit his work across the globe. With over 40 exhibitions to his name, Lim has played a major role in the evolution of Korean sculpture. His work captivates the attention of art critics and invites audiences into a dreamlike world.
Lim has chosen to express his art through traditional materials, in harmony with the cultural heritage of his country. With great discipline, he builds a bridge between tradition and modernity. Placing him on the contemporary international sculpture scene is no easy task—his art resists definition.
His art comes with no instructions. His sculptures move with poetic vitality, playing with air, wind, light, and shadow—creating a space where silence speaks and movement is still.
